British Airways

British Airways has announced that it will be receiving 4 new Boeing 777-200ERs in 2009 and thus is currently studying new long haul routes + increasing frequencies to certain profitable destinations primarily to Asia and Latin America. The main highlights are as follows :

ICN - considering 4 weekly nonstop flights with the B 772ER initially which would then be increased to daily within a year.

KUL - to be flown daily via SIN using a B 744 i.e. extension of BA 11 / 12.

EZE - services to restart from 2009 with nonstop flights from LHR due to the improvement in the country's economy since the 2002 crash.

GIG - nonstop 3 weekly flights to begin from 2009.

HKG - 4th daily frequency being studied.

YVR - double daily year round being studied.

JNB - to be increased from double daily to 17 weekly from 2009.

GCC - all flights from 2010 to BAH, AUH, DOH & MCT will be terminator flights flown by the B 772ER.

AMD & ATQ - both routes are being carefully studied.

Analysis :

AMD-LHR failed with 9W but might fare better with BA as it can extract a size able amount of feeder traffic from MAN, USA, Canada + the large O&D market between LON & AMD. BA should not fly to ATQ as 9W flies 6 times a week nonstop from the city to LHR with A 332s. Air India too flies a daily B 773ER via DEL (same plane service) so there is enough capacity serving this market segment. If BA want to expand in India, they should look at launching new flights to HYD with the B 772ER...lot of high yield potential there :)
